News headlines for October 30th 2002
(Malawi)–We begin today’s newscast in Malawi, where, faced with a 200-thousand ton food deficit, millions are risking starvation. According to the World Food Program, emergency aid is on its way. However, more is needed to fight the devastating famine that followed a prolonged drought, resulting in a poor harvest. The Southern Baptist International Mission Board’s[1] Jim Brown says they’re responding. “They really have two needs. They have current food needs, and because of what they’re eating, they’re not going to have anything for next year. We’re helping on both ends, both food distribution, and also seed distribution. Food would be for the present time, and seed would be for this time, next year.” Brown says as the relief effort progresses, there is a point where the impact of the Gospel meets real hands and feet. “This really provides a lot of validity for the life and witness of both missionaries, and also local Baptist churches that are there, in the eyes of the local population, because, obviously if you do nothing, they’re going to not really understand how folks can call themselves Christians.”
(International)–Elsewhere, terrorism is rapidly taking center stage in the international arena of governance. That is increasing not only security measures, but also risks as well. However, EvangeCube International’s[2] Nathan Sheets says security issues do not transcend the Gospel. “When we take teams in, we really try to have a low profile, in blending into the culture as much as possible. At the same time, we also have belief that we’re going out, being sent by the Holy spirit, relying on God to protect us. But you always do need to be cognizant of the area, which you are in.” Sheets says for the American church, the call is to resource believers in the global church. “By going in and providing the resources to Christians overseas, and going in and providing the training, they, in turn, can go into these areas where Americans can’t get in. We just brought 40-thosuand EvangeCubes into a Southeast Asian country, which is not the safest place in the world for North Americans to come into.”
(Brazil)–Proclaiming the birth of a “new Brazil”, the country’s President-elect is promising change and new priorities. The change is coming at a time where the church body is also on the verge of taking on new direction. For example, Insight For Living’s[3] Rolla Goodyear says their search for a new radio pastor for the Brazilian ministry has taken them a little over three years; the search is at an end. “I am excited to say that I believe we have found a replacement in a pastor in San Paulo, Brazil. He seems to be the man that God has brought to the table for us. He is well-trained, theologically, and he has a true pastor’s heart.” Goodyear adds that with a new pastor in place, their outreach has a breath of life. “We are very excited about the prospect of beginning to record a new series down there, because we have been re-airing many of our old broadcasts.”
(Hong Kong)–Meanwhile, the Association of Christian Schools International[4] is about to begin a new year with their Small World Christian Kindergarten program in Hong Kong. ACSI asks that people remember their staff members in prayer. They are hoping to quickly adjust to the 170 children from 24 nations that they plan to minister to this school year. ACSI staff members work to use their heart for missions, through their educational and teaching gifts, in showing Christ’s love to their students.
(USA)–And, Dare 2 Share Ministries International[5] is excited to announce the addition of Josh McDowell to their board of advisors. Since 1991, the Dare 2 Share focus has been to equip Christian high school students to positively influence other students through responsible lifestyles. McDowell has had a passion for finding effective ways of sharing the Gospel of Christ with the world. Founder and President, Greg Stier, says they take that calling seriously through their Dare 2 Share Ministries.
