Evangelical Missionary Shot in Lebanon

American Nurse Worked for “Operation Mercy”

Sidon, November 21 (idea) – An American missionary was shot dead this morning in the South Lebanese port of Sidon. Bonnie Weatherall (31) worked as a nurse at a health clinic on behalf of the international evangelical agency “Operation Mercy”.

She answered a knock on the door at around 8 a.m. just after the clinic had opened. An unidentified gunmen opened fire with a 7 mm pistol and shot her three times in the head.

Mrs. Weatherall was married to a British citizen. She had been working at the clinic for nearly three years, mainly looking after pregnant Palestinian women from the nearby Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp.

The building also houses a chapel. Police are still unable to say whether the killing was an anti-American or anti-Christian act of terrorism.

It was the first killing of a US-citizen in Lebanon since the end of the civil war twelve years ago. The area around Sidon is a hotbed for Islamic organizations like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

A wave of Anti-American sentiment has been running through Lebanon since the announcement of a possible war against Iraq and because of US-support for the Israeli government.

Since May there has been a series of attacks on American fast food restaurants. One person was killed in a bombing of a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet. Lebanese students have been calling for a boycott of American products and services.
