Prayer request for Christians in Sri Lanka
In the recent months there has been an increase in the
attack against Christians in Sri Lanka .A House church
in Weerawilla was burnt down on the 13th of October
2002.
Pastor Stephen Yogarajah and family were attacked in
Chilaw while travelling back after a prayer meeting on
the 16th of October 2002.
The Foursquare Gospel church in Thampalagama was burnt
down. Another Foursquare Gospel House church was
closed down and taken over by the LTTE Tamil militants
for their office in the East of Sri Lanka.
Last week on Wednesday the 30th of October there was
an attempt made on the life of Pastor Anton of
Pentecostal assembly Piliyandala. A hand grenade was
thrown at the Church in the night. The grenade struck
a tree and did not reach its destination the Church
building. Nevertheless the blast damaged the vehicle,
which was parked in the premises shattering the
windscreen and glass. The roof and the windowpanes of
the Church were damaged badly.
On November 3rd 2002 Pastor Joseph from Jesus Never
Fails Battaramulla was threatened by a group calling
itself “The society for the protection of Buddhists”.
Posters were pasted on his walls and the gate was
sprayed with paint, issuing him a death notice if he
continues his ministry.
Minister of Hindu affairs:
Sri Lanka Government Minister of Hindu cultural
affairs Mr Maheswaran has returned from a visit to
India Tamil Nadu vowing to draft similar anti
conversion laws in Sri Lanka. He briefed the press
stating that a proposal will be submitted to the
Cabinet to draft legislation to ban conversion.
His ministry has been allocated 10 Million Rupees for
the promotion of Hinduism and to build temples.
This move is backed by Buddhist groups as well. This
is of serious concern to the Church in Sri Lanka as
this is the first time ever a Government Minister is
sponsoring this proposal.
The last two months there has been tremendous pressure
brought on the Christian community in Sri Lanka. More
than twenty churches have been attacked and also there
have been strong indications that the Government will
very soon enact laws to ban conversion.
Please uphold this situation in prayer and encourage
other Christians also to do so.
