Are Christians Facing a Christmas of Violence? Muslim Extremists in Indonesia Threaten to Launch Terrorist Attacks

Jakarta, December 17 (idea) - Are Christians facing a Christmas of Violence? Muslim extremists in Indonesia have threatened to launch terrorist attacks on the Christian community.

According to investigators of the attacks on a tourist resort in Bali one of the main suspects drew their attention to a web site by a group calling itself "International Battalion of Death".

It threatens "international Christians and their friends" with violence unless they get out of Afghanistan. The enemies are identified as "America, England, Germany, Australia, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, China, India, Sweden and others".

According to the terrorists a "conspiracy of Christians" is responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines and Indonesia. Indonesian intelligence believes that the group is behind the Bali bombings and a recent attack on a McDonalds restaurant in Sulawesi.

Two years ago a series of bombs exploded during Christmas in or near churches in Indonesia. 19 people were killed and more than 40 wounded. Some clergy received letter bombs.

Last year Christians and Muslims agreed to a peace accord, which lasted, however, only till January. Indonesia has the most numerous Muslim population of any country in the world.

According to official estimates 87 per cent of the 210 million inhabitants are Muslims, 6.5 per cent Protestants and 3 per cent Catholics.
