Zimbabwean archbishop in hiding after threats from state security agents
Harare (ENI). Outspoken Roman Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city, says he is living in fear following threats made two weeks ago by state security agents. “I am now afraid and am now living in different houses,” Ncube told the weekly Financial Gazette newspaper from an undisclosed location. Ncube, who has often criticised the government of President Robert Mugabe, said he had been warned by agents to stop “politicising” his church sermons. [410 words, ENI-03-0111]
Former house of torture in Kenya to undergo spiritual cleansing
Nairobi (ENI). Religious leaders in Kenya are planning to perform a cleansing ceremony at a building in the capital where secret torture chambers were discovered last month. Leaders of the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian churches told ENI they needed to spiritually purge Nyayo House, a 24-storey building in Nairobi’s city centre, of the acts of cruelty practised under its roof in the 1980s and 1990s. The cleansing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, 23 March. Hundreds of people – including university students and lecturers, artists, politicians and journalists – are believed to have been interrogated and tortured in 12 tiny cells in the basement of the building.
