Kenyan churches disagree over call to make Christianity state religion

Nairobi (ENI). A proposal to declare Christianity to be Kenya’s state religion is generating heated debate among the country’s churches. The proposal comes from a group called the Kenya Church, which includes Methodists in the country and a number of Pentecostal churches. It comes as Muslims are calling for the entrenchment of Islamic courts in the country’s constitution. But the Roman Catholic Church and most mainstream Protestant denominations are urging that religion and the state be kept separate. [379 words, ENI-03-0183]

No regrets about opposition to Iraq war, says US ecumenical leader

New York (ENI). Despite opinion polls showing strong public support among US churchgoers for the military action in Iraq, religious leaders who publicly opposed the war said they have no regrets about the stance they took. The Rev. Robert Edgar, general secretary of the US National Council of Churches, and one of the most prominent opponents of the war, said he was keenly aware of the apparent “disconnect” between his and other leaders’ positions and the support given to the war by those in the pews.
