8 July 2003 UPDATE ON MYANMAR ARRESTS With reference to the Myanmar report below, released on June 30, information was received today that the five Christians stood trial yesterday and at the end of the day they were all released. We praise God for this outcome and thank you for your prayerful support. VOM-Australia Recently Voice of the Martyrs released an account of the arrest of five Christians in Myanmar. This is an update on their situation. MYANMAR REPORT June 30, 2003 On June 14 we reported that the following Christians were arrested at Kalemyo in Myanmar. Mr. Run Hesh Ling (Pastor) Mr. Sa Tin Khup and his daughter - Cung Hlen Mr. Thongte Mr. Lowib We subsequently reported a rumor that they might be released last week. As you can appreciate, it is not easy to get information and then to get it out of the country. This morning the latest news, as below, was received by our office in Australia. The five are still in prison with the sentence of "life in prison" or "death" hanging over their heads. The authorities have stated that there will now be a hearing on July 7, 2003 and the five will remain in prison until that time. It means that they really are just tormenting them, and perhaps they will be looking for some friends or family to come forward with money to secure their release. It is good to remember that prisons in Burma are noted for their poor conditions, and it must be especially difficult for the one sister. VOM-Australia continues to have a contact in the area who is ministering to the families of those in prison. Please pray and spread the news.
