Beyond Bonking! Thoughts on sex for teenagers

What on earth is 'sacred sex'?

Whether you are from a Christian background, whether you were brought up in another religious tradition, or whether you and your family have no particular religious convictions, you will be aware of the strong reserve at almost all levels of society about endless 'casual sex'.

'Why?' you might ask. 'Surely sex is such an enjoyable thing, there can't be any harm in any person over the age of consent going out and trying to have as much sex with as many willing partners as he or she possibly can!' Yet the truth is that, despite the seeming logic of this statement, most people (even those doing exactly what has just been mooted) have a deep down 'knowing' that there is much more to sex than two bodies frantically using each other for physical pleasure. All except the most crassly shallow of people intuitively know that sex is also a thing of the heart, something spiritual, even sacred - that to mess around with intercourse outside of a deeply committed long-term relationship is to mess around with your own and someone else's heart and soul.

Now, while most of us have this deep knowing about sacredness, we all find it really difficult to understand and to describe in words exactly what this word means when it comes to sex and sexual relationships. In this article I am going to try and share some ideas about 'sacred sex' that hopefully will make this clearer. So hold tight, here goes!
