From a thoughtful netfriend:
I read the article Gays and Marriage: A Middle Way by Jim Wallis on http://www.pastornet.net today as a way of assessing where your ministry stands on key theological issues of today.
Quite frankly I am disappointed that you allowed such an article to be included in your inventory. Mr. Wallis stated that: ” the Right has seized upon this agenda and turned it into a mean-spirited crusade. To say gay and lesbian people are responsible for the breakdown of the heterosexual family is simply wrong.” This charge is completely wrong and serves to only to create more division in Christ’s church. Mr. Wallis employed the propaganda technique of name calling for the purpose of getting emotional buy-in to his position while categorizing the opposing view with the tag “Christian Right.” The popular culture translation of the tag “Christian Right” is a group of people who are ignorant, ill-informed and not worthy of respect or consideration. Not only that, but Mr. Wallis misrepresented the conservative Christian viewpoint.
I have listened to Dobson and Colson and read their articles. Neither one has blamed the deterioration of the nuclear family on gays and lesbians. To make such a charge is shallow, irresponsible, and even deceptive because it obscures their real concern. Dobson and Colson have repeatedly stated that revising the definition of marriage away from the covenant relationship between man and woman will only serve to make an already bad situation even worse. Dobson and Colson have stated that the deterioration of the nuclear family is a moral, social, and theological problem that goes far deeper than the gay and lesbian question. The gay and lesbian problem is just as much a symptom of the deeper problem as is divorce, abuse, neglect, and adultery.
Mr. Wallis is one of many in the church who engages in this type of attack against their fellow Christians. Quite frankly it wears me down. I wish this would stop and that folks like Mr. Wallis would embrace a more Christian approach.
Sincerely,
