Much of our approach to what is considered deviant behaviour is determined by whether we see it as a matter of moral choice and free will, or as having biological cause and effect.
Thus, in regard to homosexuality, we have moved (to some extent) from seeing it as a moral choice, to one which is determined from birth by biology. To some extent, a similar approach is gradually being adopted with regard to drug addiction, not so much as something determined from birth as something which has a medical cure rather than a moral one.
Now there is some indication that paedophilia may also have a medical cause and cure. In the United States, a brain tumour caused a man with no previous sexual history to become a paedophile, cease such when the tumour was removed, resume such when the tumour re-grew, and cease again when the tumour was removed again. Is this the beginning of a different approach to the whole area?
Are we taking the Freud/Spock approach – blame something else for sin, or explain it away somehow?
