Years ago, when a bishop was visiting his new diocese of Pretoria in South Africa the Sunday before his enthronement, he was appalled to see that the white members of the congregation made their communion before the black majority. Greeted afterwards by the churchwardens, the bishop commented on this anomaly, and added: “What do you think Jesus would have felt if he had come here this morning?” To which the churchwardens replied with one voice: “Oh, he wouldn’t understand the problems we have.”
