Rights report criticises US war on terror, Chinese religious repression

New York (ENI). Echoing concerns by some US religious organisations, a prominent New York-based human rights group has criticised the United States government for its war against terrorism, saying the Bush administration "has refused to be bound by human rights standards". In its annual report on international human rights globally, Human Rights Watch said that while the US government was not among the worst human rights offenders, its "willingness to compromise human rights to fight terrorism sets a dangerous precedent", particularly because of its unique leadership role. From A to Z, new dictionary spells out ecumenical history

London (ENI). The changes that have swept over world and church affairs in the past decade have been captured in a new edition of the World Council of Churches' ecumenical dictionary. "Economic globalisation", "ethnic conflict", "Pentecostal-Reformed dialogue" and "Baptist-Orthodox relations" are among fresh entries in the 1300-page dictionary. The first edition of the Dictionary of the Ecumenical Movement*, published in 1991, was a sell-out success but needed an update. [435 words, ENI-03-0014]
