4th Feb 2003 AMERICANS AND AUSTRALIANS LEAD WORLD WITH SUPPORT FOR MILITARY ACTION AGAINST IRAQ A Gallup International survey conducted in 39 countries has found that Americans and Australians are most in favour of military action against Iraq. The majority of Australians (68%) are in favour of military action, with 56% in favour only with UN support and 12% in favour of unilateral action by the US and its allies. A similar proportion of Americans (67%) are in favour of military action, however 33% support a unilateral attack and only 34% require it to be sanctioned by the UN. New Zealanders hold a similar view to Australians, with 60% in favour of military action (52% with UN support, 8% unilaterally). Britons have a more mixed view. While 49% are in favour of military action (39% with UN support, 10% unilaterally), almost as many (41%) are against military action in any circumstances. The French and Russians appear to hold the same opinion on the Iraq situation as their leaders. Sixty per cent of the French and 59% of Russians area against military action under any circumstances.
