It was Stevie Wonder’s first night of a sell-out series of concerts in Tokyo.
As rapturous applause greeted his arrival at the keyboard, he sensed he already had the crowd in the palm of his hand. (No small impediment for a pianist!) So, pushing his repertoire aside, he called for favorites.
Immediately a voice boomed out of the darkness: “A jazz chord!”
That’s a cinch, thought Stevie Wonder, who thumped out a beauty.
“No, No!” came the response.
Another jazz chord got the same response.
He went through every jazz chord and riff, every trick, rhythm, modulation (and a full range of other musical terminology) he could think of. Each one was greeted with the same evaluation.
Sensing the artist’s frustration, the patron replied: “Mr Wonder, you could not forget! I assist you!” And he burst into song:
“A jazz chorrrrrrrrrd,
To say: ‘A ruv youuuuuu!’”
