The story is told of a man who went to a weekend philosophy conference on free will versus determinism. At the end of the weekend those who participated were asked to indicate their conclusion on the subject matter by dividing into two groups – those who believed in free will and those who believed in determinism. One man was having great difficulty deciding, but after much deliberation he decided to go over to the determinist group. As he entered the group they asked him, “What made you come here?” He replied, “Nothing *made* me come here; I decided of my own free will!”
He was promptly pointed in the direction of the other group.
So he walked over to the other group and joined them. “How did you decide to come here?” they asked. “I didn’t decide to come here”, the man replied, “They made me!” He was promptly ejected from that group as well.
