From a netfriend (a pastor) August 2003:
I must admit that I remain in a position of reflection over the issues related to homosexuality and the church. After reading the information sheet about the Uniting church decision I cannot help but think they are sending a very confused message about homosexuality to their congregations.
Firstly, if the church is going to accept that some people are homosexual, and that this is acceptable, then I think we must also sanction homosexual marriage. If we do not then we are sending mixed messages. If we accept homosexuality but exclude homosexual marriage then we are, I think, hypocrites and we have left homosexual people in a position of moral uncertainty. Surely if we expect heterosexual people to live in life long marriage relationships in order to avoid promiscuity and to provide stable and loving family environments then we ought to expect the same of homosexual people and therefore bless marriage unions between them.
This is all hanging under the big ‘IF’ of course, that is, IF we accept that homosexuality is a right way of living in moral response to God.
This is a question that remains uncertain for me.
I also think that the Uniting church has put its congregations in an uncertain legal position. I wonder whether there could have been more clearly defined legal boundaries for congregations to be aware of.
