From a netfriend: A couple of additional notes: 1. As bishop of Alexandria he had (and his successors still have) the titles Pope and Patriarch, and "Pope" as a title was given to the bishops of Alexandria before it was given to those of Rome. The Present Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa is His Beatitude Theodoros II. Since the schism following the Council of Chalcedon in 451, however, the non-Chalcedonians have their own Pope, Shenouda III. 2. It is said by some that Christianity is a "European" religion, and is somehow foreign to Africa. Muslims like to claim this when proselytising among Christians, and there are people today who talk of "African Theology". But there has been no African theologian greater than St Athanasius, and it could be said that African theology is founded on his teaching, and not only African, but European as well. Christian theology, and the Nicene Creed (which was the foundation of the Symbol of Faith used by most Christians today, even if in a corrupted form) was drawn up as a result of a theological dispute that took place in Africa. It was based on the theology of St Athanasius, who lived centuries before Mohammed.
