It seems that gay clergy are not against the wishes of very many other Christians, however.

If you wanted to make a few valid generalizations here, they’d probably look like this:
1. Most Christians are ‘against’ the idea of gay clergy (especially if you factor in Christians in the Third World, which of course is now the majority of Christians…)
2. Most younger/liberal Christians in the West have a more accepting view on the subject… (the vast majority of church-folks over 50 did not know any homosexuals personally when they were younger… I’ve done a little survey on that)…
3. All denominations of any significance/size have had/ do have gay clergy – until recently they generally had a ‘don’t ask/ don’t tell’ policy…
