Legalism and the sabbath

Conversation between a precocious/cheeky 16 year old and a Brethren elder – 54 years ago :

‘You believe that if you “enjoy” whatever you do besides going to church on Sunday there’s probably something wrong with it?’

‘Yes, the Bible says (Isaiah 58:13) we are not to do any pleasure on the Lord’s holy day.’

‘So what do you do on Sunday afternoons?’

‘I go for a walk.’

‘Do you *enjoy* your walk?’

‘Well, yes.’

‘So walking is OK, but not swimming on a Sunday? You can enjoy yourself on terra firma but not in the H2O. What’s the difference?

‘Well, if you put it like that, not much I guess.’

(Weeks later): ‘What are you doing these days on Sunday afternoons?’

‘I got convicted about walking so I have a nap.’

‘Do you enjoy your nap?’

‘Well, yes…’

‘So it’s OK to enjoy yourself horizontally but not perpendicularly?’

(Elder looks silly and gives up)
