'No' Means 'No'

From a review of 'A Return to Modesty: Discovering the Lost Virtue' by Wendy Shalit... in Christian Century March 3, 1999, p. 246, review by Gilbert Meilaender... Comments by either author or reviewer:

'Shalit notes that a great deal of sex education to which young children are subjected has as its point the disenchanting of sex - teaching that "it's no big deal". But it is a very big deal indeed, and the result of this disenchantment has not been good for women...'

'Female modesty gave men a frame of reference for a woman's "no". Without that frame of reference, but instead taught from day one that women are always as ready to receive advances as they are eager to make them, the modern male takes a "no" as a personal rebuke. That is why women today must link arms and scream "No means no"...

'What is needed is a cultural shift that restores female modesty and, along with it, male obligation.'
