Just remember what the Lord your God did... the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm... Deuteronomy 7:18-21.

The Hebrews regularly looked back and remembered how their God surprised them. Surprise adds colour to life. Before you get any older take a journey in your memory and recall the ways you have been surprised by a God of providence and grace. Christopher Morley (No Coaching) expressed it this way:

I went to the theatre
With the author of the successful play.
He insisted on explaining everything.
Told me what to watch,
The details of direction,
The errors of the property man,
The foibles of the star.
He anticipated all my surprises
And ruined the evening.
Never again! -
The greatest Author of all
Made no such mistake.

So, Lord, I will accept suprises that upset my plans, or shatter my dreams, or give a completely different turn to my day - or even to my life. Amen.
