You Are What You Sing

Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs… making melody to the Lord in your hearts. Ephesians 5:19.

This week a song I heard at a church camp has been re-echoing in my mind:

‘Faithful One, so unchanging;

Ageless One, you’re my rock of peace;

Lord of all, I depend on you,

I call out to you, again and again…’

It’s a beautiful song underlining my need for the security of a merciful and mighty God.

Repetitive themes running through your head change your thinking, what you believe, and eventually how you act. Advertisers try to get their jingles to reverberate through our minds. When young people listen to lyrics that are not conducive to holy living, they undermine the work of the Spirit in their consciousness.

What themes run through your mind and your life? Singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs will shape your Christian character more than you may realize.

God of mercy and of music, may the themes of my songs and therefore of my life enrich it for your glory (and my spiritual and emotional health, too). Amen.
