Mere Christianity

‘Who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Matthew 16:15,16.

Outside holy scripture C.S.Lewis will probably be the most quoted source in these devotions. He wanted to explain ‘mere Christianity’ in a way that Catholics, agnostics, Baptists, could say, ‘Yes, that’s what it really is!’ For him, essentially, Christ is at the centre. C.S.Lewis built on Richard Baxter’s idea, ‘In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty, and in all things charity.’

Essentially, Christianity is a trilemma about ‘Who is Christ?’ God? Out of his head? Morally corrupt? One thing you can’t say is that Jesus was merely a great moral teacher. Either he is the Son of God or something worse.

The argument goes back to the fourth century: was he God, or a bad angel? It’s a good application of Pascal’s dictum that God puts truth into the heart after using the tool of proof as an argument. Well, for most people, anyway.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, and one of us too, I will trust you, I will follow you, I will give my life to and for you. And I offer to you again my unanswered questions, with my allegiance. Amen.
