‘All things are lawful’ but not all things are beneficial… Do not seek your own advantage, but that of the other. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience… Give no offense. 1 Corinthians 10:23-33.
You’re a guest, and you learn that the meat you’re eating has been offered to the gods in a pagan ceremony. What do you do? If your conscience gives a green light, eat it, says Paul. But if someone else has a different view of Christian liberty, don’t. You mustn’t abuse your liberty in Christ, and offend the ‘weaker’ brother or sister. (On the other hand, as a preacher once titled his sermon, ‘Weaker brother, grow up!’).
Christians may rent out their hall for other religious meetings, but who else should use your church buildings?
What if it’s a New Age group doing something you regard as demonic? Scouts? Bingo gamblers? Rosicrucians? Freemasons? A witch’s coven?
Should an actor playing Jesus in a film be a Christian? If ‘yes’ what about the technicians? Should church musicians be committed Christians? Yes? What about those who collect or count the offering? The list goes on and on.
Lord, help me with issues like these to avoid two opposite dangers: a couldn’t-care-less insensitivity, and an over-scrupulous legalism. Thank you. Amen.
