Peace is not simply the absence of trouble. It is a deep experience of serenity in the midst of trouble.
Peace is not so much a still dusk when nothing moves and nothing is heard: that is tranquility. Peace is the mother bird and her chicks on a ledge behind a raging waterfall.
Peace is not psyching yourself up to present a calm exterior whatever the turmoil within; it is an inward surrendering to the turmoil. (What you do to life is more important than what life does to you.)
Studdert Kennedy put it well:
Peace does not mean the end of all our striving,
Up into the light where God himself appears
May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Amen.
