To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Isaiah 40:25.
I found these jottings about God hidden in a computer-file:
* ‘Do not come any closer’ God said to Moses out of the burning bush. If we do not have a sense of the numinus God’s great-otherness – we do not know the God of Moses.
* He is a God who makes demands on us, but also gives us the power to fulfil them.
* People who can survive the risky adventure (of seeking to know a God who is Mystery) are then able to experience an infusion of God’s presence. The more profound the experience (like love or truth or beauty) the harder it is to put it into words. As one Eastern prayer says, ‘O Thou before whom all words recoil.’
* ‘Why should we love God?’ asks Bernard of Clairvaux. The answer, ‘Because he is God.’ We love, truly, when we love for the sake of the loved one, not for what will accrue to us in the relationship.
Lord God you aren’t simply somewhere in the universe; the universe is somewhere in you: you contain the universe. I worship you. Amen.
