Talk About Your Feelings

Then those who revered the Lord spoke with one another... Malachi 3:16.

I've just come home from Dale's funeral. Dale (his real name) was a 'strong silent' type, apparently uncomplicated, devoted to his wife and family, a very good orchardist, and before that a first class honours agricultural science student. He was also secretary of his local church, of the regional cherry association, and had other accomplishments and responsibilities. But last Thursday night Dale drank 400mls of weed-killer (40 mls would also have killed him). Why? No one knows. 'Financial problems,' some said. 'He carried deep depression,' said others.

One thing was certain. Dale never told anybody anything much about himself. Whatever bothered him, bothered him alone. No one could remember Dale talking about his deep personal feelings.

Last night a young woman, who had left her husband because of his cruelty to her, phoned me and said, 'I can't stop crying. I've got to come and talk to you!' Even if you have to telephone a Lifeline counselor, talk to somebody! Unless you externalize fear, guilt, anxiety or anger they will float around in your unconscious and eventually kill you!

Today, Lord, I name before you those who come to mind who are in special need.... What do you want me to do for them, Lord? And lead me to someone to whom I can talk. Amen.
