God said to [the rich man], ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God. Luke 12:20.
The life of the fool, says Ecclesiasticus (22:11) is worse than death. The Book of Proverbs has many wise sayings about fools: when they hold their tongues, they might even be counted wise (Proverbs 17:28). Which is the meaning behind the old Danish proverb: ‘There is no need to fasten a bell to a fool.’
Canon Peter Green was parish priest of St. Philip’s, Salford, England, for forty years, and was a colorful character. A business tycoon who disliked him once tried to put him down at a public dinner. But Green’s witty response provided the last laugh. Later the man wrote to Green complaining that he’d made him look like a fool. Green replied: ‘Dear Sir, You are mistaken. I merely called attention to the fact.’
There is foolishness – lack of wisdom – in all of us. But let us learn to be wise. Old fools, says the 17th century maxim, are more foolish than young ones!
And there’s a difference between being ‘fools for Christ’s sake’ and being foolish. The ‘getting of wisdom’ is a good goal.
So Lord, help me to find wisdom and dissipate my foolishness. Amen.
