Leadership & Practical Theology

Youth Ministry

From a pastor-friend:

Youth Evangelism - by Ken Moser.

I have been challenged on numerous levels in regards to how we go about evangelism within our youth programs and structures. Ken has an honest critic of some of the most popular youth models around the world and takes a look at the early church and draws principles for evangelism and how we can apply those to our youth programs to make them more effective.

Below is some exerts from his critic on current youth models:

The Party - The Party is designed to attract young people by way of games and activities. The goal of the evening is clear - give young people a great time so that when the 'serious stuff' comes around they won't be too upset. In other words, the fun will offset the boring and they will come back next week.

The Martini - The Martini is a mutation of The Party. The Martini is a mixture of one part games and one part serious ('shaken, not stirred'). There is the obligatory 45 minutes to an hour of games, followed by a short talk, discussion groups, prayer and something to eat. this is by far the most common strategy in the world today.

The 'Two Ring Circus' - The program is built on a two-step program. The first step is to attract young people with something like The Party. The hope is to attract hordes of young people and as they begin to show an interest in Jesus (or if they make a commitment) you suggest that they begin going to the group that meets on another day for prayer and serious Bible study. The outer ring is fun, and the inner ring is more serious.

Let's Rock - This is where the youth group books a band or two, places posters all over the local high school.

The 'Coffee Club' (or, Welcome to St Starbucks) - the coffee club is where you set up a place for the local kids to 'drop in' when they feel like it. The goal is that someone will drop in, feel welcomed, and begin to pop in on a regular basis. The Christians will be there to tell them about Christ.

The Scout Club

~~~ As a youth pastor I want my groups/youth to do evangelism but I don't want to run programs that are not effective and burn leaders out. Personally, I am in youth ministry for the long haul and that means I need structures that work for me and not against me. I don't want my leaders overloaded and burnt out, but I want to see young people exploring their relationship with God. This book has some excellent insights and some challenging thoughts to Evangelism in the context of our Youth Ministries.
