Sunrise Sunset (daily devotions)

Helplessness

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Psalm 46:1
.

'Ladies and gentlemen, we are entering a little turbulence. Please fasten your seat-belts.' Soon the plane is bucking like a wild bronco, your coffee discolours the skirt of the passenger next to you, your stomach protests about the size and indigestibility of the meal you've just eaten, you feel as if you've regressed to age three and you begin to pray...

That's life: you have no control over some things. The pollens donating an aweful dose of hayfever; the deodorant of a friend which smells like bathroom freshener; the neighbour's dog at midnight; the driver behind you distracted by a pretty pedestrian; when and how you will die...

Life is unpredictable; helplessness is part of our human condition. Only God is not helpless: so trust him!

In a world which moves and shakes and is sometimes beyond my control, I thank you Lord that you are with us, and we do not need to be afraid. Amen.
