Rich, Famous And Unhappy

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Luke 18:25.

I’m looking at the man in the mirror,

I’m helping him to change his ways.

I’m looking at the man in the mirror,

If you want to make the world a better place,

Take a look at yourself and make a change.

- Michael Jackson: Man in the Mirror, from his 1987 album, Bad

Michael Jackson admitted he abused prescription drugs. His image-makers said he liked to identify with Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. A friend of the multiply-married Liz Taylor – a friend of Jackson’s – said like Michael she too was a child superstar, isolated from the real world and robbed of the innonence and spontaneity of childhood. So when hit by life’s problems, both were ill-equipped to deal with them.

Why do pop/film stars and drugs mix so easily? Elvis Presley died suddenly in 1977 with ten prescription drugs in his blood. Actor River Phoenix, who exuded innocence, died unexpectedly in 1993 with lethal levels of cocaine and morphine in his body. Well, Michael, the mirror does not lie. It’s obviously not easy, as Jesus said, to be rich and famous and a kingdomperson. Let us be warned.

So Lord, when I’m tempted to envy such people, help me to think again. Please. Amen.
