Comment on homosexuality and the Bible

(From an online friend):

The biblical texts don’t seem to get a look-in in many discussions of this kind. Certainly a forum like Facebook is less than adequate in discussing a topic of this complexity. However, at least some clarity of thinking wouldn’t go astray before some comments are posted. The distinction widespread among evangelicals between nature and acts wouldn’t have even occurred to the biblical writers – OT or NT. In their thinking there undoubtedly were only homosexual acts performed by heterosexual people. So making the distinction betrays an unwitting move away from ‘biblical’ categories. The fact is, if we accept that there simply are people who are same sex attracted, “Love the sinner, hate the sin” then rings hollow and any protestations of love for such ‘sinners’ can’t help sounding superior and self-righteous. Surely this then has to alter the way we approach the biblical material – as it has with other issues like the role of women and slavery.
