There was an uproar which resulted towards the end of the 19th century over Georg Cantor's introduction of infinity into the foundations of matthematics.

"Only God is infinite!" screamed the fundamentalists of the day.

"Mathematics is the work of Satan!"

I haven't checked, but they were probably many of the people who had earlier proclaimed "Evolution is the work of Satan!"
