OUR NEED FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

by Peter Kennedy

“While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?’ They answered, ‘No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.’” – Acts 19:1-2

Aiden Wilson Tozer was born April 21, 1897, on a small farm in Western Pennsylvania. He came to Christ when he was 15 years old and by the age of 21 he was the pastor of a small church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia.

For the next 44 years he ministered as a pastor in The Christian and Missionary Alliance. Besides being a popular pastor, Tozer was also a gifted author. Two of his books, “The Pursuit of God” and “The Knowledge of the Holy,” are considered spiritual classics. Fellow author Leonard Ravenhill once said of Tozer, “I fear that we shall never see another Tozer. Men like him are not college bred but Spirit taught.”

In his book “Born After Midnight,” Tozer writes about the Holy Spirit: “Religious instruction, however sound, is not enough by itself. It brings light, but it cannot impart sight. The assumption that light and sight are synonymous has brought spiritual tragedy to millions. The Pharisees looked straight at the Light of the World for three years, but not one ray of light reached their inner beings. Light is not enough. The inward operation of the Holy Spirit is necessary to saving faith. The gospel is light but only the Spirit can give sight.”

The Holy Spirit is God and He testifies to our faith in Jesus Christ. Has your life been touched by the Holy Spirit? Today in prayer, thank Christ for sending the Holy Spirit and trust in the Him to lead you.

“Every time we say ‘I believe in the Holy Spirit,’ we mean that we believe that there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.” – J.B. Phillips

God’s Word: “However, as it is written: ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him’– but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
