‘Dear Lord,
Your word is replete with promises
Yet those promises don’t seem as immediate as our circumstances,
nor as immediate and compelling as our feelings.
There are times when we don’t feel your presence -
there are many more times when we don’t feel we truly believe.
Help us not to confuse faith with feeling;
help us to trust you despite our feelings and our immediate circumstances;
help us to trust you even in darkness and silence.
For the sake of your son who endured the darkness and the silence.
Amen’
(from John E. Colwell ‘Why have you forsaken me?’)
