Making The Most Of The Unexpected

Clergy/Leaders’ Mal-list No. 1-142

MAKING THE MOST OF THE UNEXPECTED

From ‘Sunrise Sunset’ (HarperCollins/Harper San Francisco), Rowland Croucher’s book of daily meditations. Feel free to use or adapt it.

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10.

Robert Schuller was on his way to Japan, but his visa was not in order and he was delayed for 24 hours. It was serious, because now those who had gathered for the conference at which he was to speak would have to make other plans. He had no choice but to phone his hosts, express his regrets, and figure out how to use an unexpectedly free day.

But then he got to thinking positively. Here was a glorious unplanned day for his leisure, a special gift to him in his busy life. So, he says, he gave himself permission to do a few things he normally wouldn’t do, and the day became a joyous experience.

I have just said something similar to myself on a much smaller matter: I now have to walk for twenty minutes to retrieve something I have left behind. But, I found myself saying, that’s good: walking-and-praying is one of the loves of my life, and recently I have been too busy. Here’s a good, indeed, God-given opportunity to enjoy twenty minutes of physical and spiritual relaxation.

Today Lord, I will live by faith, and believe that nothing that happens will be accidental. I may not see the hidden purpose in the interruption or upset, but help me to make not just the most of it, but the best of it. Thank you. Amen.
