Being Like Him

BEING LIKE HIM

by Peter Kennedy

"Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is." - 1 John 3:2

Andrew Bonar was born on May 29, 1810 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He came to Christ while in high school and was ordained in 1838. Bonar was gifted scholar who read Latin, Greek and Hebrew fluently. In October 1845, he finished his notes on Leviticus and made it ready for press by saying: "Praise the Lord, who alone can bless it."

It wasn't long after publication that Bonar's Leviticus commentary became popular for its explanation of the sacrifices and the priesthood. He brilliantly explains the atonement and the intercession of Christ that is foreshadowed in Leviticus. Charles H. Spurgeon, one of the most prominent preachers in England at that time, received a copy Bonar's Commentary on Leviticus. It so blessed him that he returned it, saying, "Dr. Bonar, please place herein your autograph and your photograph."

The book was returned to him with the following note from Dr. Bonar: "Dear Spurgeon, here is the book with my autograph and with my photograph. If you had been willing to wait a short season, you could have had a better likeness, for I shall be like Him; I shall see Him as He is (I John 3:2)."

The person we are today is changing into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Today in prayer, thank the Lord that He is working in you and changing you to be just like Him.

"The real accent in the New Testament is not on how human I am, but on how Christian I can be." - Paul Rees

God's Word: "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." - 2 Cor 3:18
