Texas evangelist sponsoring ‘Wounded Heroes’ retreats
EULESS, Texas (ABP) — Saying God has given him a “burden for saints as well as sinners,” evangelist Freddie Gage is sponsoring a series of “Wounded Heroes” retreats planned in Texas, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. The first retreat is scheduled Jan. 26-31 at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas.
Gage, longtime Southern Baptist evangelist, has been associated with Rapha ministries, a Houston-based chain of hospital treatment centers, for the last 10 years. But treatment in a Rapha facility requires a fee or insurance, he said, and many “hurting” pastors and their family members don’t have the funds. Gage said his plan is to raise money to underwrite the cost so pastors and their spouses can attend without charge. He hopes to raise $250,000 immediately and $2 million over the next year for the retreats and other services.
More than 6,000 Southern Baptist ministers walked away from their ministries last year, Gage said, and another 1,500 were fired. Many others have a variety of problems with no one to turn to. “These men are wounded heroes of the faith,” he said, “and we must reach out to them.”
