The Children Of The World

The recently-issued UNICEF Report, 'The State of the World's Children 2000' contains these statistics:

# There are currently 600 million children living in poverty - an income of less than $1 US a day - 50 million more than in 1990

# 30% or more of the children under five years old in 44 countries are suffering from growth disorders due to malnutrition

# 30,500 boys and girls under five die every day mainly from preventable causes

# 250,000 children and young people around the world become infected with HIV/AIDS every month. 1.1 million Ugandan children under 15 have lost one or both parents to AIDS; 700,000 Ethiopian children and 520,000 Tanzanian boys and girls have suffered the same loss

# 130 million children around the world are not attendign school, often because families cannot afford to send them

# 60 million children aged five to 11 work in hazardous circumstances, It is estimated that some 250 million under-15s in developing countries work

# Two million children have been killed in armed conflicts since 1989
