I must be dense today: but why can't they be both,
and retain some of their own cultural identity (as so many sub-cultures
of Australians do)?

floods) in the Euphrates basin and someone escaped in a boat carrying
some animals, and the story was turned into legend over time.

With which I agree. A statement like 'the whole earth'
etc. has a metaphorical sense in other parts of the Bible (cf.
'the whole world is going after him' - they said about Jesus)...

Thought for today (and every day): 'If you say someone
is worthless, you will be in danger of the fires of hell' (Jesus,
Matthew5:22b CEV)

I'm not in your list, but have in the past been a
very active participant here and in aus.religion. Some time ago
Danny Yee (another atheist, and an exceptionally constructive
contributor when he was active) set up home pages for aus.religion
and aus.religion.christian. He also collected some biographies
for regular participants, with a view to helping us all be aware
of the people at the other end of the wire, and fostering a friendlier
net.
He presently has available biographies for
Andrew Bromage
Some of these folks are still active here also. The
bios can be found at
It was a great idea, and it is nice to know something
about each other. My bio is there, and gives some clues as to
why I (an atheist) still participate here. Basically, I was an
active Christian for many years, and it remains and always will
remain a critical part of my life experience. Though I am no longer
a believer, because faith was such an important early formative
experience for me I have retained an interest in the Christian
religion, in the bible and in some of the topics discussed here.
