The first well-known acronym was created in Rome by the early Christians somewhere during the first century. It was a time of great persecution for the small Christian sect and they used ICHTHUS, a Greek word meaning fish, as a secret sign to identify themselves to each other. It stands for the Greek phrase "Iesous CHristos Theou HUios Soter" meaning Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
