Theology

Fundamentalists And Liberals

From a netfriend:

Believe me, I am just as critical of so-called "liberalism" in theology.

Let me draw an analogy. In the world of science we have science and science-fiction. In science-fiction people let their imaginations run wild, albeit informed by some scientific notions. However, if you want to do real science you must operate in the real world. In "Star Trek" the space-ship Enterprise accelerates to Warp 6 in a matter of seconds, but in the real world the captain and all his/her crew would be splattered like raspberry jam against the back wall in such an event. If you really want to land a craft on Mars, you have to deal in science, not science-fiction. Science-fiction becomes escapism after a hard week of work. Science becomes a way of interacting with the real world during that working week.

Fundamentalists or liberals turn the science of theology into science-fiction.They propose flights of fancy that ignore the real world, instead of giving us an understanding of the real God, so that people can engage with that God. And then anyone who wants to pursue engagement with the real God has to suffer their persecution because his or her honesty threatens their escapist fantasies.
