If I haven’t got a formal mid-day appointment,
I usually have a quick sandwich in the canteen.
It’s a good opportunity to mix with staff and be human.
Even the Managing Director does this.
Sitting at the same square tables,
Eating and drinking the same food
from the same plates and cups is important.
You did that, Lord.
You walked among us, ate and drank,
Went to weddings [1] and barbecues, [2]
Listened to the petty talk, and know what it is to be human.
Because of this, I can chat to you – as I’m doing now,
Confident that you hear and understand.
More important, I need to listen – I’m not very good at that.
“My son, just be quiet for now.
Listen to the bustle around you.
I hear every word that is being said.
Some of it grieves me because it is so self-centered.
But there are people who care,
People who are listening -
being an understanding ear to colleagues in need,
and giving of themselves.
These people are on my business,
And I want you to be too.”
