4. Old Testament Walkers and Talkers viii. Joshua Thinking God spoke to Joshua giving him authority (Joshua 3: 7), and then on eight further occasions. These are listed in the book of Joshua in chapters 4-8 and in chapter 20. This matter of "authority" needs to be clarified or at least commented on. The authority given by God to Joshua reflected the content of his words to him, rather than the fact that there had been a conversation. This is very important for me today and for every one as we come before God to be still and hear his voice. I don't sense any word from God to stand up and be a prophet, or to move into any major position of leadership. But I do sense his word to put down on paper my paraphrase of what I think he is saying to my spirit, occasionally as a word from God to readers, but more as an example of walking and talking with God. Listening Think for a moment about what the word authority means. It's all about the power to act, and the limits of what that action should be. Reflect on this, my son, and realise that I give to all my family - that is, to you and your brothers and sisters - the power and authority to speak and act on my behalf. This means actions consistent with my word and wrapped up in my love. To particular individuals, I will also give a special authority to speak, to preach, and to lead my people. This is different from the task that I have given you in writing this book. Praying Thank you, Lord, for this special understanding, and for the privilege of being just one person in the midst of a vast army of empowered people. Copyright Howard Smith 2002.
