Walking And Talking With God - David, Solomon, Elijah And Jehu
Previous article in series

4. Old Testament Walkers and Talkers

xiii. David, Solomon, Elijah and Jehu

Thinking

The scriptures go on to report how God spoke to David 4 times, Solomon 2 times, Elijah 3 times, and then to King Jehu (2 Kings 10: 30). God also spoke to King David through Gad the seer (1 Chronicles 21: 8-13).

There is one very major difference from today in this series of conversations. Although the details are very sketchy, each of these people was either a king or major prophet. The book of Chronicles concentrates on kings and prophets, so it is to be expected that we read of God's words coming to the rulers of the people - spiritual and temporal - and then being passed on to the people. I would like to think that God led, inspired, and spoke to ordinary folk too, but the real lesson is that it is different today because our God has given us his Spirit.

Praying

I thank you that today you have given each of us your Spirit to dwell within and that it is your desire to walk and talk with all of us. I guess I have been writing this down very repetitively, but it continues to amaze me, that you, the eternal God, the maker of heaven and earth, wish to have intimate dialogue with each of us.

Listening

My son, think about this. I have made each of you sons and daughters in my family and am teaching you to speak and to listen, just like a parent teaches his children in an earthly family. As you learn to follow my voice, this will come far more frequently than to the kings and prophets of olden times. Now read the words of my servant Peter and see how it all fits together.

Scripture

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2: 9).

Praying

Lord, I would never have made that link on my own. When we belong to you and are called into your light, we become as kings and prophets! My God, you are awesome in your love, and I need to respond by declaring your praises. I bless you, Lord, and worship you.
