8. Walking and Talking through the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Father God, you are very holy, and yet you call to me from the heaven of your presence and invite me to talk to you. So I bow in awe, and repeat your precious name again and again in worship.

Your kingdom come.

Lord, I long for the day when your kingdom will be made visible, so that all men and women, young and old, will lift their hearts and hands to you in worship. Make it come quickly Lord.

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

And Lord, I want to align myself with your will – not just accepting it passively, but actively doing my part to make it happen. Surely, this is what happens in heaven where every angel and archangel, and other powers that I don’t understand, are together as one working with you to bring about your will. So I pause now to marvel, that you want me to stand and work with them, and I love you.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Thank you, Lord, for the way that you fill my every need. Daily bread is more than food, but includes safety, fellowship with your people, purpose, and the serenity of knowing that you are with me and I am with you. These are spiritual things, Lord, and part of the daily bread is you, coming to me and ministering to my deepest need. Yes you taught me to ask for this, but I also bow in worship marveling at your incredible provision for us.

And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And you know how I’ve sinned, Lord. I goofed – even today. Things I said, and didn’t say. Acts that I’m ashamed of. I’m sorry Lord, and I ask you now to forgive me. But in the same breath I ask for the grace to forgive other people in the same way that you forgive me. And having forgiven – to forget.

And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

Lord, I trust you and marvel that you know every weakness within me. Please protect me from temptations that I can’t resist. And when I do meet the evil one, or one of his agents, please stand by me to protect and deliver me.

For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours forever.

Because, Lord, I’ve caught a glimpse of your glory and it’s awesome in power and majesty, and goes on forever. Even to pray this prayer is exhilarating because it makes me part of it. So I worship you, and love you.
